An avalanche airbag is a crucial piece of safety equipment designed to enhance the chances of survival for individuals caught in avalanches. This device is primarily used by Snow sports enthusiasts, Backcountry Skiers, and Mountaineers who venture into avalanche-prone areas.

Avalanche airbags work on a simple yet life-saving principle. They consist of a backpack with an integrated airbag system. In the event of an avalanche, the user can deploy the airbag by pulling a handle. The rapidly inflating airbag increases the individual’s volume, making them less dense than the surrounding snowpack. This helps keep the person closer to the surface and reduces the risk of being buried deep within the snow.

Airbags can increase the chance of a person’s survival in an avalanche by anywhere from 31 percent to 85 percent compared to those without one.
